Locking Plate - (Clocks)

Locking Plate - (Clocks) Striking System in a clock of striking the hours and sometimes the half-hours by means of a locking wheel or plate in which notches are cut, the notches being farther and farther apart from the one o'clock position round to the twelve o'clock position. Dates from about 1625 but was ousted in the late 1670's by Barlow's rack and snail striking.
