Gesso - (Furniture, Art, Frames) A preparation of chalk worked into a paste with parchment size, used as priming before colouring or gilding furniture. In the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries the gesso coat on mirrors, side-tables (and more rarely seat furniture) received low relief carving before gilding.
