Bayonet - (Weapons) The bayonet as a broad-bladed dagger with wooden handle for sticking into a musket barrel can be very old c. 1580, but at the end of the seventeenth century a Frenchman invented the modern bayonet which fitted into a tubular socket and not into the barrel.
